To ensure smooth flow of heavy traffic, the Road Transport and Highways Ministry has decided to grant online permissions for movement of overweight cargo.

"It will be a path-breaking initiative to mark a new era for heavy transport in India by ensuring digitalisation in the sector," a official statement said.

"The new government at the Centre has been working towards undertaking landmark initiatives to digitalise India and this initiative will be in line with the government's 'Make in India' and 'Digital India' vision," the statement said.

It said Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari will launch a web portal for online approval of movement of Over Dimensional (OD) and Over Weight Cargo (OWC) here on January 6.

Besides, the Ministry will also hold a day-long seminar on "Heavy Transport in India: Entering a New Era Through Digitalisation" which will see about 250 stakeholders like heavy equipment manufacturers, project owners, engineering, procurement and construction companies and research and academic institutions come together to lay the roadmap for it.

Digitalisation will "offer an opportunity to save time and avoid transit delays in movement of equipment of national importance by Modular Hydraulic Axle Trailers," it added.
