Rosaiah seeks Rs 6,000 cr from Centre

Chief minister K Rosaiah has requested the Centre to consider the recent cyclone as calamity of severe nature and sanction Rs 6,000 crore assistance from the National Calamity Contingency Fund as advance.

He reviewed the progress on relief operations pertaining to Laila cyclone.

Officials said power had been restored in all the cyclone-affected places. Human lives were saved and damages to public and private properties were minimised. Satellite technology enabled to track the movement of cyclone and this was communicated with interior areas as well, they said.

Meanwhile, the department of disaster management submitted a preliminary report to the chief minister.

 

In all 80 mandals and 743 villages were affected by the cyclone. Agriculture crops in about 15,000 hectare mainly paddy, summer cotton, sesamum, groundnut, blackgram, maize and sunflower were damaged. Horticulture crops including mango, banana, papaya, acid lime, guava, cashew, sapota, betelvine, chillies, vegetables and drumstick suffered large scale damage.

About 420 fishermen boats and 7,000 fishing nets were lost while 3,000 boats were damaged.

Teams have been formed for enumeration at the earliest, according to a press release.
