The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) plans to build a eight-lane road in eastern Kolkata connecting Parama Island to Garia in the extreme south of the city.

Ashok Bhattacharjee, minister of urban development, government of West Bengal, said at the launch of a new joint venture involving KMDA, South City consortium and the Merlin Group that technical evaluation for the project will be completed within the next two months.

KMDA complete technical evaluation for a four-lane flyover on EM Bypass by February 2008.

According to P R Baviskar, CEO of KMDA, the twin projects will involve an investment of Rs 130 crore.

The projects would be completed in two years and tenders for construction work would be floated after technical evaluation was over.

Recently, a new bridge constructed by KMDA near its housing-cum-commercial joint sector project 'Hiland Park' partly collapsed.

"The part that collapsed was built was Ircon and it has taken responsibility for repairing it," claimed Baviskar.

Another flyover would be built on Anwar Shah Road in south Kolkata to cope with the increased traffic caused by the South City project.

"KMDA is evaluating technical and financial aspects for the flyover," said Sushil Mohta, managing director of Merlin Group and also South City director.
