The Indian rupee depreciated by 4 paise to 46.72 a dollar in the opening trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange today, in tandem with other weak Asian currencies.

Forex dealers said that subdued opening on the stock markets also weighed on the rupee sentiment.

The rupee had closed 30 paise higher, at 46.68/69 a dollar, in the previous session.

Meanwhile, Bombay Stock Exchange index Sensex plunged by 48.33 points to 16,974.00 in early trade.
