Vowing to fight the menace of terrorism jointly with Afghanistan and Pakistan, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has suggested that a trilateral mechanism be put in place for Moscow's interaction with the two countries to streamline collective efforts.

Medvedev, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai, who met at the sidelines of the summit of the six-member Shanghai Cooperation Organisation pledged to unite in the battle against terrorism.

"Many issues, first of all complex challenges, including terrorism, we can resolve only through collective efforts. If we could create an effective trilateral mechanism, it would benefit our peoples and would be beneficial in resolving the tasks faced by us," Medvedev said.

In his bilateral meeting with Zardari, Medvedev called for opening a new chapter in relations between the two countries and offered Moscow's all-round assistance to Islamabad in combating terrorism.

"I would like to wish you success in your work, and all of success in combating the horrible evil of terrorism," Medvedev was quoted as saying by the Kremlin press office.

"We are ready for cooperation on all issues of anti-terror combat," Medvedev told Zardari.

At his maiden meeting with the Pakistan President, he also expressed readiness to develop comprehensive trade, economic and cultural relations with the country.

"I think this would be important in making situation in our region more peaceful and healthy, which in turn will contribute to the existence of Pakistan as a single and strong state," Medvedev said.

While Medvedev assured Russia's support in the rebuilding efforts in Afghanistan, Karzai agreed that the neighbours should close ranks in their fight against terrorism and other regional threats.

"I am sure this initial step will take us further... towards the common objectives of the three countries and the region in an effective fight against terrorism, bringing stability to the region," Karzai said.
