He said that India had stuck to peaceful use of nuclear technology and that Russia's stand did not differ much from it. Trubnikov, however, said the nuclear deal had become more of a matter of India's internal politics. "We hope that they (political parties) come to an agreement that is agreeable and beneficial," he said.

"My personal opinion is that the Indo-US nuclear deal is useful for India but it is for the Indians to decide to what extent and at what price they want it. In international matters, people think in terms of years and decisions cannot be taken in a span of seconds, minutes or days," he said. He denied that there was any divergence in Moscow's stand with New Delhi on Iran's nuclear programme.

The ambassador was speaking at the opening of a new Press centre at the Russian Information Center here.

Regarding the stalemate in the Gorshkov aircraft carrier deal, he said the situation, especially in the financial sector now, differed entirely from the time when the deal was signed. He added that at the time of the deal, Russia needed money and the Indian side used that situation to get the cheapest possible price. Those figures had now become unrealistic and the amount spent on the renovation was also very high, he said.
