Sail Seeks Business From Govt

Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has asked the government to make it the designated supplier of steel pipes for the Shallow Tubewell Irrigation Project currently on in Bihar.

The project, which aims to build one million shallow tubewells in the state, could provide SAIL with a captive market of up to Rs 612.5 crore. The project is partly subsidised by the Centre with an outlay of approximately Rs 2,800 crore to be spent over the next five years.

The steel industry in the country is currently passing through a difficult phase, low demand being one of the major factors. The per captia usage of steel in the country is as low as 29 kg and steel companies are looking for ways to boost the demand.
