Dr Samar Sen, one of India's foremost and earliest agricultural economists, passed away on Wednesday. He was 88. He had been ailing for some time. |
Dr Sen is survived by his wife, Anita, and two sons, Abhijit and Pronab. Both are economists and working in the Planning Commission. |
Dr Sen took his Ph D from the London School of Economics in 1946 and taught at Dacca University until Partition. He was the first member of the Indian Economic Service in 1938. |
In 1948 he joined the ministry of agriculture. He later served in the Planning Commission as adviser before going to the World Bank as executive director in 1978. |
After coming back to India Dr Sen chaired the RBI committee on taking the green revolution east (1985) and was later member of the Sarkaria Commission. |
