The multi-product SEZ in Gujarat was stalled by the order of the vacation Bench of the court on July 1. The Adani Group had not been heard when the status quo order was passed.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan today lifted the status quo order. It asked the persons opposing the project to approach the Gujarat High Court, which will hear the matter on July 18. The only restriction imposed by the court was that the Navinal creek should not be filled up. The petition was later withdrawn.

The Adani Group argued that instead of harming the environment as alleged by some fishermen and other opponents of the project, it has developed the area. The creek is now one of the best natural harbours with a depth of 17.5 metres servicing vessels.

The mangrove area has increased instead of being reduced as alleged by the opponents of the project. It also asserted that it would not affect the livelihood and flora and fauna in the region.
