Royal Dutch/Shell and Total Gas of France today announced the inauguration of their LNG terminal in Hazira, Gujarat - the country's second LNG import facility.

"The company will operate the Hazira terminal as merchant terminal, making sales on short term contracts," Marc De Hartog, director (gas & power) of Shell India, said.

Shell has sold its first consignment to Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation. The first cargo was carried by a Shell-controlled tanker, the 136,000 cubic meters Gemmata.

"The first cargo of LNG originated from Australia," Hartog said.
