The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) today issued a showcause notice to the scam-tainted Adarsh Housing Society in Mumbai for blatant violation of green norms. The ministry, in its letter, asked the society why the 31-storey building should not be demolished and sought a written reply within two weeks.

“Noting that the society did not have any permission for building the structure from either the environment ministry or the relevant state government department, we have asked them why the 31-storey building should not be removed. Our only concern is whether the coastal zone regulation (CRZ) norms were followed or not,” said environment minister Jairam Ramesh.

It said the National Coastal Zone Management Authority, after due deliberation, has concluded that urgent action should be initiated, under the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, for blatant violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone Notification, 1991, against the proponents of the housing society for removal of the unauthorised structure.
