The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has expressed its displeasure at the government’s response to its recommendations and has threatened to approach the high court if the government continues to be indifferent to its recommendations.
SHRC member Parthasarathy told reporters here on Tuesday that the commission had recommended to the government to constitute an Agriculture Commission to facilitate the farmers to get a remunerative price for their produce. Such a commission would help solve the nagging problems faced by the farmers and assist them in protecting their crops. “The Agriculture Commission could play a major role in bettering the lives of the farmers and prevent them from committing suicide,” Parthasarathy said. He rued that is has been six months since the recommendation were made but there has been no response from the government.
Parthasarathy said, the SHRC which came into existence three year ago has till date registered 21,125 cases. “Of these, 4,873 cases have been registered suo motto based on reports appearing in the media. The SHRC has disposed off 11,225 cases,” he explained.
This year, 7,125 cases have been registered and a majority of them have been disposed off.
He said, in Dharwad district 168 cases of human rights violation have been registered this year and 67 of them have been disposed off.
Most of the cases pertained to rehabilitation of flood victims, health, drinking water problem and harassment by police.
The SHRC had recommended the government to shift a few flood-affected villages in Gadag district two years ago. However, till date no measure has been taken by the government, he lamented.
