Union Minister of Science and Technology, Earth Sciences Kapil Sibal today voiced his serious concern against adoption of expensive European technologies at times of meltdown for CO2 reduction in India’s atmospheric conditions.
Sibal also called for united local efforts to evolve technologies to contain its emission levels.
Pointing out that it was the SMEs which were substantially contributing to the existing emission levels, Sibal said, "“What is therefore required are newer, cheaper and safer solutions based on evolution of local technologies that can be given to SMEs to contain their greenhouse emissions.”
“For this, India’s international strategy should be based on global commitments to fight out ecological imbalances with local thinking and avoid buying technologies built up by European nations as these are extremely expansive for countries like India especially at times of global meltdown.
Rising emission levels can best be fought out with differently circumstanced geographical solutions as these have to be separate for Himalayas and uniquely different for central India, North-East and other coastal areas”, he added.
Sibal held the view that large industries promoted by entrepreneurs like Tata’s, Ambani’s, Mittal etc. takes sufficient care to prevent environment degradation, while on the other hand SMEs engaged in textiles, leather, automotive component degrade environment in the absence of technology infusion.
Sibal also gave a call to not to build newer cities the way China went ahead on it by putting up huge complexes which cause release of emissions. India needs to develop its newer cities on metro and CNG transport lines which reduce pollution and cause conveniences to their habitat so that these are accessed by all.
Speaking on the occasion, M J Bonnafont, Ambassador of France in India said that Europe was committed to bring down its emission levels by 8% in next 8-9 years. The European Union will also strive to further reduce their emission levels by 20% in next 12-14 years.
Bonnafort called upon USA to respond to the call given by world’s environmentalist to come on table and make commitment for reduction of their emissions by bringing in metamorphic changes in their consumption patterns.
