Union human resource development minister Kapil Sibal has urged the Tamil Nadu government to endorse the Navodaya system in the state to enable rural students to have access to quality higher education.

“All states have accepted the scheme except Tamil Nadu. There has to be a Navodaya School in every district. These schools are better than that of Kendriya Vidyalayas,” he said. Sibal was speaking at the inauguration of Central University of Tamil Nadu at Tiruvarur.

Chief minister M Karunanidhi said the Centre should reserve 50 per cent of the seats in central universities, IIMs and IITs for candidates who hail from the states where these universities are located.
