Six members of rights body Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) were arrested on Thursday for trying to take out a procession without police permission in the metropolis, police sources said.

"There was fear of trouble as they tried to take out a procession without permission and some of them were arrested," the sources said.

APDR sources said that 50 of their members assembled at Hazra crossing for taking out a procession to the Alipore Correctional Home to show solidarity with those taken into custody for supporting evicted slum dwellers of Nonadanga in east Kolkata.

APDR chief Sujato Bhadra alleged that some Trinamool Congress members assaulted the APDR members and removed them as police remained 'a silent spectator'. Bhadra described the police action as 'undemocratic and unacceptable' and claimed that this ran counter to the 'promises made by the chief minister to protect democratic rights'. He said that APDR had sent a formal protest note to the chief minister.
