Six women activists of Bhitamati Surkhya Manch, an outfit opposing Posco steel project in Nuagaon panchayat, were seriously injured due to lathicharge by police to disburse the agitators on Monday.

Two anti-Posco activists were arrested as tension gripped the proposed project site on Monday.

Sources said that hundreds of women activists led by Bhitamati Surkhya Manch were sitting on a dharna at Nuagaon demanding shifting of Posco project from their fertile land and relocating it on barren land, seven km from the present site.

Despite their agitation, the district administration was carrying on the project related work, including felling of trees and ground leveling and boundary wall construction at Nuagaon with the presence of armed police since two months. Situation had worsened last week when hundreds of women gheraoed the officials of the district administration, Posco and IDCO.
