Tamil Nadu government today announced that it has proposed to supply six lakh free LPG connections to people at a cost of Rs 140 crore in 2009-2010.
The scheme for supplying free LPG connection with double-burner gas stove was launched in 2006-2007 to benefit families not having LPG connections.
According to the policy note presented by State Minister for Food E V Velu in the Assembly, Government had allocated Rs 140 crore under the scheme for 2009-2010.
During 2007-2008, Government of India had released eight lakh connections under the scheme. These connections had been distributed to beneficiaries till March 2009,it said.
The policy note said for 2008-2009,Centre had released only six lakh gas connections and state Government provided Rs 161.45 crore.
'As the allotment of connections by Union Government was received only at the fag end of the financial year and since model code of conduct was in force during the Lok Sabha polls, there has been some delay in the commissioning of these stoves,' it said. "This target is likely to be completed by August 2009".
