Solar energy to get a boost

The government of India plans to produce 20 million Mw of power using solar energy said director, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy A K Singhal.

Speaking at a seminar on ‘Renewable Energy: Options For Heating and Lighting’ organised at Basaveshwar College of Engineering in Bagalkot, he said the production process will be completed in three phases.

The government had earmarked Rs 600 crore last year, for enhanced the amount to Rs 1,000 crore, Singhal said. The first phase of work will see projects being completed for producing 100 million Watts of solar power by 2013. The Union government is planning to produce nearly 20 million Mw of power from solar energy.

 

He said time had come to consider renewable energy to overcome the present power crisis faced by the country. The government has prepared a national action plan to save energy and use renewable sources, Singhal added.

Karnataka minister Govind Karjol said the state government is considering offering tax concessions to owners of buildings installing solar energy units.

He advised officials of energy departments to install solar energy devices in their official and residential buildings, and set an example for others.

He said, a proposal to establish 400 kV power unit at Lokapur in Bagalkot district is pending with the Union government.

Member of Goa State energy department N P S Varade explained how solar energy is being used in his state by commercial establishments and residents.
