Arjun Sengupta named deputy to Manmohan in economic cell

A shake-up in the structure of the All-India Congress Committee saw general secretary Ambika Soni removed from her post as political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

The charge of party affairs in Kerala was also taken away from her in a reaction to the recent crisis during the Rajya Sabha election, when rebel candidates were put up against the official nominee. However, Soni retained charge of the media, the party announced on Friday.

Rajasthan leader Nawal Kishore Sharma and Delhi leader and secretary to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, R K Dhawan, were appointed general secretaries.

With this, the All-India Congress Committee will have eight general secretaries, including Soni, Vayalar Ravi, Kamal Nath, Mohsina Kidwai, Oscar Fernandes and Mukul Wasnik. Motilal Vora will continue as treasurer.

Noted economist Arjun Sengupta has been made vice-chairman of the party
