Spice exports up 19% in April-Aug to Rs 2,600 cr

India's spice exports have gone up by 19 per cent in the April-August period of the current fiscal to Rs 2,600 crore over the same period last fiscal on an increased demand.

The country had shipped spices, including peeper, chilli, ginger and garlic among others worth Rs 2,190 crore in the first five-months of the last fiscal, the Spice Board said.

"Exports have gone up, as demand has gone up. The prices have also appreciated," Spice Board official said.
    
Though chilli is still the highest forex earner among the Indian spices, garlic and ginger, the prices of which have sky-rocketed within the country in the last few weeks, are also in great demand overseas.
    
Garlic exports have jumped by a whopping 327 per cent to 13,250 tonnes during the April-August period of the current fiscal over 3,100 tonnes in the same period last year.
    
Exports of ginger have also appreciated 163 per cent to 4,150 tonnes from 1,575 tonnes during the April-August period of the last fiscal.
    
Chilli exports in the April-August period of the current fiscal stood at 102,750 tonnes, up 35 per cent over the same period last year. Value-wise also, it has outpaced others to garner foreign exchange worth Rs 631.74 crore against Rs 467.6 crore in the April-August period of the last year.
    
Total exports during the first five-months of the current fiscal stood at 2,39,850 tonnes, compared to 2,11,950 tonnes in the year-ago period.
