Breakaway group in move to end agitation

No end seems to be in sight for the over 45-day long agitation by the textile weavers of Surat against the imposition of the Central value-added tax (Cenvat) in the textile weaving sector. The strike is being spearheaded by the Federation of Gujarat Weavers Association (FOGWA).

A majority of the weavers who attended a meeting of the FOGWA summoned at the Lakhawala Compound on the Varachha road were of the opinion that the agitation should be continued, which seems to be losing steam.

A breakaway group from FOGWA had recently decried the prolonged agitation. Naming itself the South Gujarat Weavers Association (SGWA), it has called upon the striking weavers to end the agitation and start work.
