After a gap of over six decades, Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road was today thrown open to cross-LoC trade with Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra flagging off a convoy of 13 trucks for the historic journey.
The trucks laden with fruits, walnuts, honey and spices were formally sent on a historic journey by Vohra at a colourful function here this morning with a hope to increase the volume of trade with passage of time.
It is after the gap of 60 years that the road has been thrown open for cross-LoC trade. The road was opened for passenger traffic in 2005 by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.
The trucks will cross the Aman Sethu (bridge at Kaman post), the last Indian territory and would be unloaded at Chakoti in Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
"Our trucks will cross the bridge and will be unloaded at Chakoti while the trucks coming from that side will be unloaded at Salamabad", Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Mubeen Shah said.
President of Peoples Democratic Party and Lok Sabha MP from Anantnag Mehbooba Mufti, vice-president Maulana Iftikhar Hussain Ansari and Basharat Bukhari attended the inaugural function.
