State earns Rs 6200 crore as VAT & cess on petrol, diesel

Gujarat government has earned over Rs 6200 crore as VAT and cess charged on petrol and diesel in the state in last two years till December 2009. Till December 31, 2009, the state government collected Rs 2103.71 crore as VAT on petrol and diesel and Rs 494.58 crore as cess. This was revealed in the state Assembly in a written reply to a question asked by Congress MLA Amit Chavda.

The state government said that it charges 23 per cent VAT and 2 per cent cess on petrol and 21 per cent VAT and 3 per cent cess on diesel in the state. Regarding income in the form of VAT and cess from these products, the government has given provisional figures of Rs 3131.74 crore as VAT and Rs 528.43 crore as cess in 2008.
