The Karnataka government would introduce a bill in the coming legislature session to amend the Karnataka Agricultural Produces Marketing (Regulation and Development) Act 1966 to provide for reservation to various categories of people, including SCs, STs and OBCs in APMCs.

A decision to this effect was taken at the May 25 meeting of the Agricultural Producers Marketing Committees, Minister for APMCs and Sugar, Shivaraj Tangadagi told reporters here. Under the existing Act, there is no provision for providing reservations to various posts in APMCs election.

The government proposed to earmark 15 per cent reservation to SCs, five per cent to STs and 15 per cent each to OBCs and women, he said.

The government wanted to do away with the one-third majority to pass no-confidence motion against the president and vice-president by replacing it by a two-third majority, he said. A two-day workshop for APMC presidents, vice-presidents and secretaries will be held here from July 8, he added.
