Karnataka is looking at providing 250,000 residential sites to urban and rural poor across the state in the next one year. The process of developing these sites will begin in the next three months and the allotment will be made to landless families living below the poverty line (BPL), Karnataka minister for housing Katta Subramanya Naidu said.
Naidu, who held a meeting with officials of the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation and Housing Department, here today, said 200,000 sites would be developed in the rural areas and allotted at a nominal charge of Rs 2,500 per site. Each site will have a dimension of 30x40 feet. In addition to sites, the government was also planning to build 200,000 houses to the poor across the state. The government has fixed a deadline of August 1 to commence work on these projects.
G V Konguwad, secretary, department of housing, said, “The housing department would acquire land at various places across the state as per the government guidance value. We have already acquired 250 acres in and around Bangalore for the purpose. The government would allot 50,000 sites to the urban poor across the state.”
The minister said of the 450,000 houses planned to be built by the BJP government to the houseless and landless people in the next three years, about 150,000 houses would be completed in the first phase by April next in rural areas.
A total of 50,000 houses would also Be constructed in urban areas under ‘Vajpayee Housing Scheme’, Naidu told reporters.
The government was considering three types of houses — Bhagya, Sampada and Yashas — in cities for the benefit of the homeless and the project would be taken up on the basis of demand. The cost of each unit would be in the range of Rs 3.65 lakh to Rs 4.90 lakh, Naidu said.

The Bhagya housing scheme will have a house on a 325 sq ft built-up area with one bedroom, Sampada on 375 sq ft with a bedroom and a study room and Yashas on a 450 sq ft area with two bedrooms. The construction of 100,000 houses has been proposed under the scheme, the minister said.
The Centre has promised to give Rs 50,000 subsidy per house after their completion, he added.
