The Centre has directed states to take appropriate remedial action where higher order medicines had been prescribed instead of basic generic drugs, the Lok Sabha was informed today.

"It has reported that in some places higher order medicines have been prescribed instead of basic generic drugs," Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said during the Question Hour.

He praised Tamil Nadu for having the best system for providing generic drugs under the National Rural Health Mission (NHRM).

"I want to congratulate Tamil Nadu for having the best system for improved availability of drugs under NHRM, followed by Rajasthan and Haryana," Azad said.

He lamented that some states were lagging behind in implementation of NRHM.
