Around 19 such contracts, involving exchange of 2085 MW of power between 12-odd states, are being executed on a daily basis during pre-specified hours each day.

Delhi Transco Ltd. has taken the lead by entering into 9 contracts involving purchase of sale of 430 MW and purchase of 780 MW during pre-specified hours from mid-May to September.

State Electricity Boards (SEB) like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and West Bengal are also undertaking trading while more states are expected to negotiate bilateral power contracts to tide over their intra-day demand variations in the future.

As per these contracts, the two constituents strike a deal to buy or sell a particular quantity of power during a certain period of the day for a pre-specified period of time.

For instance, Delhi Transco Ltd. (DTL) has entered into a contract for supply of 100 MW of power to the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) between midnight to 6:00 PM every day between 15 May to 30 September.

Besides this, DTL has entered into four other contracts with Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) for transmitting around 330 MW of power on a daily basis during pre-specified hours between 15 May and 30 September.

Its not just one way traffic. DTL is also drawing about 780 MW of power daily under two contracts with the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd. (UPPCL) and one contract entered with the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board.

DTL has also entered into bilateral contracts with West Bengal State Electricity Board (WBSEB) for drawing 100 MW from 13 May while it has entered into another agreement with Goa for drawing 50 MW daily.

Officials at DTL said some bilateral contracts for drawing of power are being terminated due to lower demand for power in the Capital this year because of the monsoon showers.

Apart from DTL, the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) is also supplying daily power of 200 MW under two contracts with Haryana and 100 MW each to Kerala, Chattisgarh and Maharashtra.

Nearly all the bilateral exchanges are being carried out by Power Trading Corporation (PTC), except the exchange of 50 MW of power between Goa and Delhi being carried out by a new trading outfit
