Steel Secretary Pramod Kumar Rastogi, who is retiring by the end of this month, may join telecom tribunal TDSAT as a member.

"P K Rastogi's name has been shortlisted for the post of member of Telecom Dispute Settlement and Arbitration Tribunal. But, few procedural clearances are still required," a source in the know told reporters.

TDSAT hears cases between service providers, government and the regulator, Telcom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).

A vacancy has arisen after J S Sarma moved to telecom regulatory body Trai as chairman in May this year.

TDSAT is without a chairman after Justice Arun Kumar's term ended last month. The tribunal at present has only one member — G D Gaiha.

Rastogi, a 1974-batch Andhra Pradesh-cadre IAS officer, joined the ministry of steel last year, at a time when steel prices had touched new heights and the government had to intervene to put a check on the price movement.

He is credited to have guided the steel sector out of the worst impact of the global economic downturn. He has been instrumental in shaping key policies aiding to the growth of sector in the past one year.

Prior to that, Rastogi was special secretary in the Ministry of Defence.
