The government is set to amend the Indian Electricity Act, 1910, to have tougher punishments for power theft.
Sources said the power ministry has already put up a proposal before the Cabinet for issuing an ordinance in this regard.
The Cabinet could not take up the proposal due to paucity of time in its last meeting, they added.
The Cabinet is now likely to take up the issue after Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee
