The daily production of the industry has come down from an average 80-90 tonne per day to 50-55 tonne. Even the wages of artisans have been cut following the downtrend.

The Rs 125-150 crore turnover zari industry of Surat is totally in the decentralised sector with not a single composite unit of zari in the city.

According to industry sources, one of the main reasons for the current slowdown in the industry is a recession going on in the textile industry. With the zari business and the textile industry closely linked, any impact on the textile industry has a bearing on the former.

Also, a spurt in the prices of vital raw materials such as gold, silver, copper, viscose and polyester yarn have played havoc with the industry.
