Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy yesterday urged President S D Sharma not to appoint the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) leader G K Moopanar as the Prime Minister and instead order fresh general election. In a letter to the president which was released to the press, Swamy raised several objections to the possible appointment of Moopanar who is being mentioned as a likely successor to the outgoing Prime Minister, H D Deve Gowda. One of the reasons cited by Swamy is that the TMC had lost the mandate of the people, judging by the results of the local bodies elections in Tamil Nadu which had shown a sharp fall in the DMK-TMC vote compared to the Lok Sabha polls 10 months ago.
