Indefinite curfew was clamped in five police outpost areas of Godhra town in the state on Friday evening following a communal clash during a Ganesh immersion procession.

At least 13 persons, including a DSP and two other police personnel, are reportedly injured in the incident.

Police had to resort to lathi-charge and lob tear gas shells to disperse the stone-pelting mob which damaged three shops and two vehicles.

The injured have been admitted to the Civil Hospital in Godhra and the condition of three of them is said to be serious.

Police said trouble began in the Rani Ki Masjid area when a group of people attending a Ganesh immersion procession and members of another community took up a row.

The altercation soon took a violent turn and the mob damaged the shops and two vehicles parked near Neelam Theatre.

Senior officers including district superintendent of police M D Antani have rushed to the spot and are camping there. Though the situation has been brought under control, the whole town remains tense.

Para military forces have also been deployed in the town. Sources said the Ganesh procession came under stone pelting as it passed through the minority-dominated Polan Bazar area, provoking retaliation from the devotees in the procession.

The director general of state police K Chakravarti said the additional inspector general of police (Vadodara range) would review the situation and take necessary steps.

One company of rapid action police had already been deployed in the communally sensitive town for additional security measures during the Ganpathy celebrations apart from the local police.
