Thapar University, Patiala, a premier technology institute in Punjab today rolled out its Vision 2030, to become a world class institution of higher education. Chairman Board of Governors and Managing Director Crompton Greaves S M Trehan said more focus would be given to the genaration of knowledge than the dissemination of knowledge.
He apprised that the university has sought funds from the World Bank’s Technical Education-Quality Education Programme. He added that the Government of India got 21 applications under this programme and Thapar University was the only institute that applied for post graduate research and post doctoral research.
The university, according to him should scout for sponsored researches.He said he wants it to run on self sustaining basis and to achieve global standards they availability of adequate funds was imperative.
He said under the new vision, the university would aim to create more patents than simply increasing the number of degree holders.
Trehan added that this part of the country has a high concentration of SMEs. So the research would also remain centre on the subjects affecting the competitiveness of the small and medium players.
The director of the university Abhijit Mukherjee told that the university has proposed a project on environment preservation under the World Bank Project.

Thapar University, he added plans to engage its students more often with the industry in north. This can help students find more relevant research projects that may be beneficial for the sustainable industrial development.
Trehan said that the they perceive to create a global environment in the university so that student need not go abroad for higher studies after acquiring their bachelor’s degree in engineering from them.
