The number of digital transactions grew 23 times till March 2017, compared to November 2016, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi scrapped old denomination of Rs 500 and banned Rs 1,000 notes. 

Value-wise, digital transactions grew 24 times. Around 75 townships went completely cashless, while 15,000 institutions started accepting only cashless payments. The government’s Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) App saw a record 19 million downloads since December 2016.
