Sequence of events that will follow the presidential polls on July 19
- 19 July: Election of the President
- 22 July: Results are announced. The President elect has to indicate when he would like to be sworn in — morning, afternoon or evening. In the past, astrology has influenced the decision . N Sanjeeva Reddy, for instance, was sworn in at 10.11 am on July 25, 1977.
- 23 July: Dress rehearsal for the swearing-in ceremony in the Central Hall of Parliament. The Ministry of Home will oversee the proceedings. Who will stand in for the President elect for the rehearsal will be decided — could be a Home Ministry official. All diplomats will be invited to the swearing-in-ceremony. The President elect will have to decide if he wants to make an acceptance speech — some, like Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, have done so
- 25 July: The swearing-in ceremony day. The Chief Justice swears in the President. The 30-minute affair ends with the President elect becoming the President, getting a 21-gun salute and riding to the Rashtrapati Bhavan as First Citizen. The ceremony will be telecast live. In the old days, the vehicle used for the 8-minute drive from Parliament House to Rashtrapati Bhavan used to be a horse-drawn chariot. Now, it will be a limousine.
