Surat recorded 8.8% growth in job creation.
As tier I cities get congested and costly, tier II and III cities recorded over 60 per cent share in total job creation in the country last financial year, according to the latest Assocham Placement Pattern (APP) study.
Tier II and III cities are likely to generate 40 per cent more jobs in the near future, according to the study which analysed trends of job openings in 56 major cities and 32 sectors from a sample of 6.54 lakh employment opportunities generated in last financial year.
While 17 tier II cities like Surat, Pune, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh and Lucknow cornered 38.8 per cent share in creating 253,702 jobs, 33 tier III cities like Allahabad, Udaipur, Agra, Ajmer, Kota and Meerut accounted for 23 per cent share with 150,391 new jobs in the past one year.
Among tier II cities, Surat recorded an 8.8 per cent growth, while Bhubaneshwar and Pune recorded 42.2 per cent and 19.7 per cent growth in job creation. Chandigarh, Lucknow marked 12.2 per cent and 10.8 per cent growth. The growth was 6.68 per cent in Jaipur, 4.33 per cent in Indore, 4 per cent in Nagpur, 3.35 per cent in Kochi, 3.28 per cent in Ludhiana.
"Tier II and III cities are emerging as prominent destinations for companies to provide job opportunities for aspirants.The hiring activity during 2010-11 was more widespread than in many years as all key industries started rebuilding their staff strength and gearing up for an optimistic 2011-12,” said D S Rawat, secretary general of Assocham.
In recent years, tier I cities like Delhi/NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore had emerged as the fastest job generating with estimated 249,779 new jobs created fuelling a growth of 38.2 per cent in the year-on period.

But the trend is clearly changing. Among tier I cities, Delhi/NCR and Mumbai recorded the 15.3 per cent and 11.1 per cent growth in providing job opportunities. Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata have 9.7 per cent, 5.6 per cent, 5.4 per cent and 4 per cent share in total job creation in tier I cities. Hyderabad and Kolkata registered growth of 10 per cent and 7.3 per cent growth during FY11 over FY10.
Among tier III cities Allahabad, Udaipur, Agra, Ajmer and Kota are top leading cities which clocked major growth of 69.6 per cent, 62.5 per cent, 60.9 per cent, 49.3 per cent and 45.6 per cent during the period. Meerut and Kanpur registered 38.5 per cent and 26.8 per cent growth in job creation.
The IT/ITeS sector, which commands 30 per cent share in total employment generation during 2010-1, registered 27.6 per cent growth. Academics or education sector remained second with 8.94 per cent share, recording 24.8 per cent growth.Real estate and engineering sectors which constitute 7.95 per cent and 6.7 per cent share in total employment generation witnessed a growth of 42.2 per cent and 29 per cent respectively.
Automobile and aviation sectors accounted for 4.13 per cent and 3.73 per cent share in employment generation, marking a growth rate of 21.4 per cent and 19.7 per cent.Manufacturing and pharmaceutical sectors with 3.16 per cent and 3 per cent share registered 21 per cent and 16 per cent growth during 2010-11 as compared to 2009-10, according to the APP study.
