The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) will set up its second campus in Hyderabad. The foundation stone for the project will is expected to be laid shortly, to commemorate with the birth centenary of TIFR founder Homi J Bhabha.
TIFR director Mustansir Barma had recently written to chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy about their proposal for setting up a second campus and projected an investment of over Rs 2,500 crore over 15 years. The campus would come up within the University of Hyderabad.
Barma said that TIFR was poised for growth but the current campus in Mumbai lacked space to meet the demands. About 50 faculty, 200 students and 200 each technical and non-technical staff will be in place by the end of phase-I.
The Hyderabad campus will have about 200 permanent faculty, about 1,000 students and 300 researchers in addition to 400 technical and 500 non-technical staff by 2020.
The proposed centre is expected to promote collaborative research with other research and educational institutions including the central university here. TIFR, which is a deemed university, is researching on fields relating to astronomy and semiconductor among others. It was established in 1945 and its present campus in Mumbai was inaugurated in 1962.
