A decision in this regard was taken at a high-level meeting presided by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi this evening. It was decided to float tenders for sand quarrying so that the new system was in place from July this year, an official release here said.

The private sand quarrying existed in the state till 2003, when the erstwhile Jayalalithaa government decided to take over it.

The meeting also signalled that Karunanidhi, discharged from the hospital yesterday after treatment for neck and back pain, had resumed official work.

The Chief Minister had also summoned a two-day conference of District Collectors and Superintendents of police on June 19 and 20 to review the law and order, welfare schemes and development works in the state.

He had also convened a meeting of top police officials on May 25 to review the law and order in the state, the release added.
