The Tamil Nadu government will launch an English-Tamil e-dictionary in January 2008 to help IAS and IPS officers of other states in using its official language for correspondence.

The e-dictionary will be unveiled by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on the occasion of Thiruvalluvar Day on January 15, Director of Tamil Language Development Rajendran said here.

"We are preparing an e-dictionary to help IAS and IPS officers from outside (other states cadre), and the work wil be completed by the end of next month," he said at a one-day workshop for government officers and workers on use of the official language.

The dictionary will be available online as well as on CDs.

Rajendran said nearly 99% officials sign files in Tamil, and only 1% use English. Even these officials have been told to learn to sign in Tamil, he added.
