The Tamil Nadu government will finailse a new policy to encourage roof-top solar power generation while implementing a Rs 447-crore project to reduce its transmission and distribution (T&D) loss, according to a senior government official.
Speaking on the sidelines of Chennai 2020, PWC Davidar, principal secretary (energy department), said that the state government was keen on tapping solar power and was preparing a policy on roof-top solar power generation systems.
“Those who generate with roof-top systems can consume the power so generated and also feed the grid the surplus. The department is waiting for some clarifications like the price at which power could be fed to the grid,” he said.
Davidar, who is also the princiapal secretary of Information Technology department, said the government was planning to install meters at distribution transformers and feeders and was mulling use of information technology (IT) for meter-reading and billing.
Mapping of the state’s power assets and consumers with a geographic information system (GIS) was also being planned, he said.
