The Tamil Nadu government is allocating Rs 80 crore to support 400 primary agricultural cooperative societies across the state for agriculture machinery. The move, to provide Rs 20 lakh to each of the 400 cooperative societies, is expected to help farmers avail agriculture machinery at lower rent.
Farmers are finding it difficult to hire labourers, since people are migrating from rural to urban areas, including big cities and growing small cities in search of better jobs and earnings, an official release said. With the availability of machinery, they could increase the yield, and speed up the processes with less reliance to the availability of labour force.
Further, the drying up of water resources and increased cost of agriculture are increasing burdens. The new technology would help farmers increase yield from smaller area of agricultural land and also increase returns to them from the process.
This, in turn, would improve the economy in rural area and enhance the living standards of the farmers, it added.
