Trai seeks financial autonomy from govt

The telecom regulatory authority of india (Trai) has sought financial autonomy and its share in the licence fee of telecom and cable companies for meeting its expenses.

In a written reply to a query in Lok Sabha, minister of state for communications and IT Shakeel Ahmad said Trai had send a proposal to government in this regard.

Shakeel said government was examining the matter.

To another query, the minister said discussions were being held with industry associations and experts regarding the necessity of having a data protection legislation in the country.

To another query, Ahmad said services of department of posts are being utilised by the election commission in its exercise to revise the electoral rolls on a country-wise basis.

Shakeel said election commission will make suitable payments to the department for the work carried out by the post offices.
