The All India Motor Transport Congress today threatened that truckers across the country would go on an indefinite strike from December 5 to protest high toll taxes.
All transport operations in the country will come to a halt starting from December 5 midnight, said truckers representative body AIMTC's President G R Shanmugappa.
"The single-point agenda for the present call for nationwide 'Chakka Jam' is for the just implementation of toll rules of 1997, regarding vehicle category and rate of toll," he added.
The truckers body said its members had met officials of the Ministry of Road Transport yesterday over the issue of heavy toll taxes, but they were unable to provide any solution to the demands.
"We have been meeting the officials of the ministry, since August but nothing has been done so far," Shanmugappa said.
AIMTC said that if their demand is not met by November 25, over 70 lakh truckers will go off the road and the strike would be extended to other segments such as tempos and small goods carriers.
"We reminded the government that more than 25 per cent of the toll plazas have already recovered more than principle amount along with interest and are making abnormally high profits. This is not justified at all," he added.
