Trade Union Centre of India (TUCI) has given a call for a march to parliament on August 29 in protest against the government's "neo-liberal" policies.
The TUCI has also decided to organise street play at various locations in Delhi from today till August 28 to stage the problems of the workers, general secretary Sanjay Singhvi stated.
"A seminar has also been organised at Gandhi Peace Foundation hall in New Delhi on August 28 to enable a free and open discussion on the issues confronting the working class," Singhvi said, adding "about ten thousand workers are expected to attend the march (to parliament)".
Singhvi said TUCI demands curb on price rise, speculative trading and imperialist globalisation on sectors like fish workers, motor transport workers, plantation workers and retail sellers besides scraping of SEZs.
The TUCI also demands effective social security laws for unorganised workers and comprehensive protection for agriculture workers as promised in the "Common Minimum Programme" (of UPA) apart from throwing out all monopolistic retailer and building up PDS stocks again, Singhvi said.
Claiming that government policies are encouraging contract and casual workers' system, Singhvi said TUCI demands enforcement of Building and Other Construction Workers (Regulation of Employment and Welfare) Act, 1996 besides legislation to reverse this "trend" and gurantee job security.
