The ULFA today threatened to target leaders of the ruling Congress leaders in Assam if army operations against the banned group continued. A caller claiming to be from the group's strike force 28th battalion in upper Assam rang up a private TV channel's office here and made the threat. The caller also claimed that ULFA "could not be defeated even by 10 lakh armymen, leave alone 10,000 (as sent here by the Centre to carry out operations against the rebel group after it killed nearly 70 migrant workers)," adding the operations were, however, in "their interests". Analysts say during security operations, ULFA try to earn sympathy of the rural people, and recruit new cadres on the pretext that the government had alienated them. |
