The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Union steel ministry have initiated a technical upgradation programme for the 1,600 steel re-rolling mills in the country.
The programme will be implemented by the steel ministry under the global environment facility (GEF). The technology bureau for small enterprises (TBSE), a joint initiative of UN Asia Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology and Small Industries Development Bank of India (Sidbi), has been assigned to assess the financial needs for implementing the programme.
"Because of obsolete technology used by re-rolling units, there is an urgent need for improving efficiency and thereby cost reduction and pollution control," TBSE chief Utpal Bajpai said.
