The number of colleges that can be affiliated to a university might soon be capped.

In its proposal to the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), the Centre’s flagship programme to overhaul higher education in India, says a university should not have more than 200 colleges.

According to RUSA, limiting the number of colleges under a university will help maintain proper academic standards.  “This phenomenon negatively affects the academic quality of the university. It is imperative that states create more universities,” the ministry said in a press statement.

In India, average number of affiliated the colleges per university is 300. The number of colleges under certain universities is  much higher. Osmania University in Hyderabad, for instance, has 901 colleges affiliated to it. Pune University has  811 colleges.

Likewise, Rajasthan and Mumbai universities have 735 and 711 colleges attached to them. RUSA is a new centrally-sponsored flagship umbrella scheme aimed at providing strategic funding to higher and technical institutions in states.
