Even before the formal launch of the much-awaited national insurance schemes to be unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 9, the banks in Uttar Pradesh have already enrolled about 3 lakh applicants.

PM Suraksha Bima Yojana and PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana are primarily aimed at providing insurance cover to the underprivileged sections of society against low premium.

"The banks have enrolled 3,00,000 applicants under the two schemes in the last three days across UP," Bank of Baroda (BoB) general manager Nirmesh Kumar said here this evening.

BoB is the lead banker and the nodal bank for the rollout and coordination of all the central government schemes in UP.

He said the banks would be holding special camps and roping in business correspondents to create awareness about the twin schemes in days to come.

All Savings Bank account holders are eligible to be enrolled under the schemes.
