The Uttar Pradesh government has lifted the ban on the entry of imported raw sugar in the state.

State cane commissioner Sudhir M Bobde wrote a letter to the Railways that, since the crushing season was on the wane, the government felt the entry of raw sugar in UP could now be allowed.

The Railways can now brings racks of the raw sugar in UP imported by state sugar millers. The state had banned the import of raw sugar at the peak of agitation by cane farmers in UP, demanding better prices last year. The government had apprehended that the agitating farmers could create a law and order problem if raw sugar entered UP.

The state sugar mills, including Bajaj Hindusthan, had contracted almost 900,000 tonnes of raw sugar from Brazil, but the consignment could not leave the ports following the ban.
