Power sector unions in Uttar Pradesh want Lanco Kondapalli to be divested of the mandate for executing the Anpara C 2x500 Mw thermal power project.

They want the Rs 3,347 crore project to be to given to Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel) on a negotiated basis so that it can be implemented in the public sector.

This would help Uttar Pradesh overcome the grave energy crisis it faced, said Shailendra Dubey, an all-India leader of power engineers.

After the reported intervention of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati in the project, they have also stepped up their lobbying with the state government and are waiting for the final outcome of the battle for Anpara C, which has been in the pipeline for about 15 years. In the last decade, the battle had been fought between South Korea's Hyundai and Japan's Mitsui.
